Autropa is a portmanteau of the French word for other (autre), and the name Europa, a figure from Greek Mythology, after whom the continent of Europe was named. This name was chosen because the various polities created as the lands in which the adventures of the first campaign would take place were superimposed on the real world map of the Picardy region of France, and other parts of west-central Europe. While the landscape, and many other environmental factors, are based upon the features of Earth, there is no other immediate connection to Earth's historical development; however, the socio-cultural features of the various polities that were invented do sometime draw on real world socio-historical cultural traits, albeit mixed with postulated alternate realities and plenty of purely fantastical interpolations.
